An original promissory note dated Providence, Rhode Island, May 12, 1860, Thomas H. Rhodes signs that he promises to pay John Brown Francis 5.00 within four months. Rhodes was developing one of the first entertainment pavilions in the country at this time, and JOHN BROWN FRANCIS [1791-1864] was probably an investor. The document is endorsed on reverse by Francis. He was a lawyer, politician and Chancellor of Brown University.
