Description

Description:
Uncommon vintage 1861 Province of Canada vellum Crown Sale Land Grant document to Elisha Alger for 100 acres at the price of 0 in the Township of Cramahe, County of Northumberland, recorded January 14, 1861, document prepared December 18, 1860.  15-3/4 x 13-1/2 inches, docketing on verso.
Signed by Lieutenant General Sir William Fenwick Williams, Baronet of Kars and Administer of the Government of the Province of Canada adjacent to the Great Seal (Note: this fell under the 1841-1867 time period defined by the Act of Union of 1841 in which the British Parliament combined Upper and Lower Canada into the single Province of Canada, before separating into Quebec and Ontario in 1867 - Sir William Fenwick Williams serving as both governor and commander-in-chief of the Province).
Also signed by Secretary Charles Joseph Alleyn, of the Upper House of the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada, as well as by Assistant Commissioner of Crown Lands Andrew Russell, as well as by the Deputy Registrar/preparer (signature is clear but handwriting not able to discern).
The 100-acre parcel is described as "The North half of Lot Number Thirty three, in the Sixth Concession..."
Condition:
Folded - both soft and hard creases (see photos).  The entire document is age-tanned, but the front and back (verso - those two panels of the triple-folded document that are exposed to the air and handling) display moderate browning or soiling with a bit of foxing beyond the rest of the document.  The text and handwriting is clear and distinct, easily readable except for the aforementioned handwritten signature and two other notations that can be discerned with a magnifier but are inexplicable - some sort of office coding perhaps?  Of course, it is all slightly faded after so much elapsed time.  The seal is affixed and reasonably distinct except for some fading - a little more heavily on its righthand side.  The seal might be considered in just "good" condition, but o
verall, the document is in very good condition.

Our auction at
eBay item number: 224309647473 is for an
1871 Canadian Mortgage Indenture covering this very same property, offered by The Edinburgh Life Assurance Company.  The two documents together begin to piece together a nice history and provenance...
